The Art

Hapkido, "The Art of Coordinated Power," is a martial arts system of flowing, circular motions incorporating kicks, throws, joint-locks (breaks) and punches. Its attacks focus on the weakest parts of the opponents body such as arteries, nerves, joints and organs. Defenses are "soft" circular deflections to diminish or neutralize the power of the attacker. With a "no rules" fighting philosophy, Hapkido is taught as an art - not a sport.

Tae Kwon Do or Taekwondo means “The art of kicking and punching.”

Tae – to strike or block with the foot

Kwon – to strike or block with the hand

Do – the way or art

The School

With its beginning in Chicago in 1971 and with the opening of the "Southside" location in September of 1996, the school is one of the largest "adult" schools in the country with over 600 students and an experienced staff of Masters and Black Belt instructors. Unlike many Chicago schools, it draws mostly adult students with an average age of 35. K.S. Hyun Hapkido and Taekwondo Schools of Martial Arts and Self Defense in Chicago and its Black Belts are certified by the Korea Kido (Hapkido) Association in Seoul and the Korean Government's Ministry of Education. Today, the phrase "Sung Moo" (successful training in martial arts) is offered as a greeting and demonstration of mutual respect by everyone in the school.
